Children in Beijing claim they are happy

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-29 11:33:59

Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 29 C Recently Beijing Municipal Women
Federation issued 8,100 questionnaires on childrens happiness. The
survey shows that more than 80% of respondents claim they have a happy
life.
When asked What is the happiest thing in their life, 37% of them said
that they regard their parents good life as the happiest thing. Only
13% consider less study and more fun is the happiest thing.
Meanwhile, only 7% of the respondents acknowledge that when their friends
get praised they will become jealous, and 30% think when their friends
are praised, they will feel as if they themselves received praise.
Ms Yao, a mother of a 10-year-old pupil is worried about the result of
the survey. She said that the nature of these children should be seeking
fun, and she didnt think the children have told the truth. When they
say their parents good life is the happiest thing for them. After all
parents happiness couldnt equal the happiness of children themselves,
Ms. Yao said.

Pandas start new life in Hong Kong

(Source: China Daily)

A pair of panda cubs given to Hong Kong as a gift from the central
government arrived yesterday to celebrate the Special Administrative
Region's 10th anniversary.

Hong Kong, Apr.27 - A pair of panda cubs given to Hong Kong as a gift
from the central government arrived yesterday to celebrate the Special
Administrative Region's 10th anniversary.
The SAR government said their new names, chosen from thousands of entries
in a contest, will be Le Le and Ying Ying.
The pandas left their home in Wolong, Sichuan at 7 am for Chengdu, where
they were put on a plane at 11:40 am bound for Hong Kong. The pair
arrived at about 4 pm.
At a ceremony held at Hong Kong International Airport, Secretary for Home
Affairs, Patrick Ho, and head of State Forestry Administration, Zhao
Xuemin, signed and exchanged certificates, which signalled the official
handover of the giant pandas.
In an address, Ho said after the central government gave An An and Jia
Jia to the HKSAR in 1999, it was a privilege for Hong Kong to be given a
new pair of young and healthy giant pandas.
"It shows the care and love of the central government for HKSAR, and we
are truly grateful for that," he said.
The pandas will be trained by staff at Ocean Park to adjust to their new
environment, Ho said, and they will officially meet the people of Hong
Kong on July 1, the day of Hong Kong's handover.
He believed the pandas will bring lots of joy to the people of Hong Kong.
He also said the pandas have an "important duty", to build a family in
Hong Kong.
Zhao said the people of Hong Kong and the whole of the Chinese mainland
should feel especially happy.
It was raining when the pandas took off from Wolong, but the sun was
shining brightly on their arrival in Hong Kong.
The male panda, number 606, was named Le Le, which means happiness.
The female, number 610, was named Ying Ying, which means fullness and
blossom.
Their names were chosen from 13,000 entries in a competition organized by
the Home Affairs Bureau.
HKSAR Chief Executive Donald Tsang said Le Le and Ying Ying are suitable
names for the pandas.
Speaking in Henan, where he is on an economic visit, he hoped the panda's
live happily and start a family in Hong Kong.

China issues white paper on IPR protection

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-21 10:44:40

(Source:Xinhuanet)

BEIJING, Apr. 21 - The Information Office of the State Council, China's
cabinet, Thursday issued a white paper titled New Progress in China's
Protection of Intellectual Property Rights.
The white paper, the second of its kind since 1994, gives a "brief
introduction" to and "explanation" of China's efforts and new progress in
protecting intellectual property rights (IPR) over the past decade.
The document is intended to "help the international community have a
better understanding of the real situation regarding China's IPR
protection and make a proper judgment."
The white paper lists China's major progress in protecting IPR as follows:
-- Establishment of a relatively complete system of laws and regulations.
Since the 1980s, the state has promulgated and put into effect a number
of laws and regulations covering the major contents in IPR protection,
including the patent law ,trademark law, and copyright law.
In 2001, around the time when China was admitted into the World Trade
Organization (WTO), the country made comprehensive revisions to the laws
and regulations regarding IPR protection and their legal interpretation.
The revisions brought the laws and regulations into conformity with the
WTO's "Agreement on Trade-related Aspects of Intellectual Property
Rights" and other international rules on IPR protection.
-- Patent protection. From April 1, 1985, when China's patent law went
into effect, to the end of 2004, the State Intellectual Property Office
(SIPO) handled 2,284,925 patent applications with an average annual
increase of 18.9 percent.
Of these, 1,874,358 were domestic applications, and 410,567 came from
other countries, accounting for 82 and 18 percent, respectively.
By the end of 2004, the SIPO had approved 1,255,499 patents. Of these,
1,093,268 were domestic ones, and 162,231 were from other countries,
accounting for 87.1 and 12.9 percent of the total number of approved
patents, respectively.
-- Trademark protection. In October 2001, the Standing Committee of the
National People's Congress made revisions to the "Trademark Law" for the
second time, thus bringing the relevant provisions of China's "Trademark
Law" in line with the principles of WTO's "Agreement on Trade-related
Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights."
By the end of 2004, China had had 2,240,000 registered trademarks, and
meanwhile, 129 countries and regions had had 403,000 trademarks
registered in China. This represents almost a 79-fold increase over that
in 1979, accounting for 18 percent of the total number of registered
trademarks in China.
-- Copyright protection. According to incomplete statistics, from 1995 to
2004, copyright administrative management departmentsat all levels
confiscated 350 million pirated copies, accepted 51,368 cases of
infringement and resolved 49,983 of them.
In 2004, they accepted 9,691 cases of infringement, resolved 9,497 of
them and imposed administrative sanctions on the infringersin 7,986 cases.
"These included the investigation and punishment of two
Chineseenterprises that had infringed upon the copyright of the Microsoft
Corporation of the United States and other major cases," says the white
paper.
-- Protection of audio and video products. Since the 1990s, the
publication market supervision authorities and cultural administration
authorities have cooperated closely with other relevant departments in
making sustained efforts to enforce order in the audio-video market.
According to incomplete statistics, from 1994 to 2004, nine CD
duplicating enterprises had their duplication business licenses revoked,
and 200 illegal CD production lines were discovered.
-- Protection of new varieties of agricultural and forestry plants. On
Oct. 1, 1997, China began implementing the "Regulations on the Protection
of New Varieties of Plants," greatly expanding the scope of IPR
protection in China.
China has issued and implemented five lists of protected new varieties of
agricultural plants and four lists of protected new varieties of forest
plants, which cover 119 genera and species, including 41 agricultural
plants and 78 forest plants. The numbers are far higher than the minimum
numbers required by the "International Convention for the Protection of
New Varieties of Plants."
-- Customs protection. In September 1994, China began to carry out border
protection of IPR. From 1996 to 2004, the Chinese customs ferreted out
4,361 cases of right infringement in import and export, which involved
630 million yuan.
Since 2000, the number of cases discovered by the customs has increased
by 30 percent annually. The customs have effectively cracked down on the
illegal import and export of right-infringing goods, preserving order at
ports, and safeguarding the interests of proprietors.
-- Public security organs act on criminal infringement on IPR. From 2000
to 2004, the Chinese public security organs cracked 5,305 cases of
criminal infringement on IPR, which involved nearly 2.2 billion yuan, and
arrested 7,100 suspects.
Among them, there were 4,269 cases concerning infringement on the
exclusive rights of trademark ownership, which involved 1.18 billion
yuan, and 5,564 suspects were arrested. A number of suspects were found
guilty of the production and sale of fake or inferior products and
illegal business operation, and sentenced accordingly.
-- Judicial protection of IPR. From 2000 to 2004, procuratorial organs at
all levels approved the arrests of 2,533 people suspected of criminal IPR
infringement, and instituted prosecutions against 2,566 suspects.
"In the future, the Chinese government will continue to earnestly execute
its international obligations in this regard, enhance its cooperation
with various countries and international organizations with a more
active, open attitude, and join hands with them in promoting the
establishment of a sound system and environment favorable for IPR
protection worldwide," the white paper says.

Aging society to cost Chinese dearly

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-24 09:36:06

Chinanews, Haikou, April 24 - Judged from the data from the National
Population and Family Planning Commission of China and the UN, and the
retirement age of 60 in China, the GDP spent on supporting China's elders
will be 280% of the current level in 2050, according to Gao Xiqing,
deputy director of National Council for Social Security Fund.
Gao believes that China will face a faster and more penetrating aging
process in the near future. In 2000, the percentage of population above
65 years old was of the same level in the world, and about 50% of the
figure in developed countries. However, by 2050, China will approach the
developed countries in this aspect.
"Nowadays, we are building a nationwide partly accumulated social
insurance system based on the monthly fees paid by urban employees, and
China has set up a national social security fund already, its market
value being 320 billion yuan, but still far from enough," said Gao.

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political
Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top advisory body, made the

Jia, who arrived here Sunday on an official good-will visit, said it is
in the common interests of both China and Tunisia to comprehensively

Mebazaa said China's successful experiences are worth learning and the
Tunisian National Assembly will strengthen exchanges and cooperation with
China's National People's Congress and the CPPCC, and support the
governments to conduct reciprocal cooperation in various fields.
He said China is an important force in safeguarding world peace and a

World stock exchanges go hunting in China

www.chinanews.cn 2007-04-09 09:48:57

(Source: Xinhua)

Apr.9 - Only two days after Robert Greifeld, CEO of Nasdaq, announced in
Beijing the introduction of a China equities index, Noreen Culhane,
executive vice president of the NYSE, also arrived in the Chinese capital
hunting for potential listings.
"Global stock exchanges are stepping up efforts to recruit Chinese
companies," said Zuo Xiaolei, chief economist with Galaxy Securities.
"To survive and make profits," Zuo said, "stock exchanges have to list
more companies."
Greifeld visited China late in 2005 soon after becoming Nasdaq president.
Nine Chinese companies listed on Nasdaq in 2006 and six more have listed
in the past three months.
"China is our fastest-growing market outside the United States. We are
optimistic about the number of Chinese companies that can list on
Nasdaq," said Xu Guangxun, Nasdaq's chief representative in China.
Eighty-one Chinese firms raised 20.5 billion U.S. dollars from overseas
initial public offerings (IPO) in 2005.
In 2006, 86 Chinese firms raised 44 billion dollars from overseas IPOs
and accounted for 19 percent of the 2006 world total.
These statistics explain why New York, Nasdaq, Toronto, London,
Singapore, Tokyo and other giant stock exchanges are flocking into China.
"Chinese firms have become a new power in the world capital markets,"
said Yuan Gangming, a well-known economist with the Chinese Academy of
Social Sciences.
"China must speed up the development of its domestic capital markets," he
said.
Yuan's warning echoed a report released by the Research Center for China
Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC).
Too many high-grade Chinese enterprises listing overseas will slow the
development of the domestic capital market and prevent Chinese people
from benefiting from the companies' growth.
Meanwhile, listing overseas could be risky because it will expose
companies to the risk of a takeover, the report said.
The CSRC is encouraging big state-owned enterprises to list domestically
or in both overseas and domestic markets. It has called on Chinese
companies that have listed overseas to come back and issue shares on the
mainland.
China Mobile and Bank of Communication have filed "return" applications
and PetroChina is also making preparations.
In 2006, as the Chinese stock market swung out of a four-year bearish
ordeal, 65 companies listed, raising some 17.1 billion dollars.
"China's stock markets have done well recently," said a senior official
with the Shanghai Stock Exchange, "although there are certain problems."
For instance, China has almost 20 million enterprises and about 10,000 of
them qualify for listing. However, complicated and time-consuming red
tape have kept most of them outside the stock market.

China opposes textile restrictions

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-08 08:51:37

(Source: CRIENGLISH.com)

Apr. 7 - The spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce made the
announcement on Thursday.
The US textile and clothing industry asked the US Government to re-impose
quotas on 14 categories of clothing to protect US manufacturers from
Chinese imports.
The spokesman says that the move counters trade liberalization and smacks
of protectionism.
Meanwhile, China also objects to new measures taken by the European Union
against imports of Chinese textiles.
The European Commission has published guidelines clarifying what it would
consider safeguards against textile and clothing imports from China.
The guidelines set up alert zones for each category of Chinese textiles
imports. If these thresholds are reached, the EC will undertake an
investigation.
Informal consultations with China will allow it to provide sufficient
remedy but, if the remedy is insufficient, safeguards can be invoked.

Chinanews, Apr. 4 - Beijing plans to invest US million to rebuild and
extend the city's medical infrastructure and update medical equipment, as
well as to integrate its emergency rescue resources, in an effort to
build an emergency medical treatment system, that includes an emergency
rescue network in urban areas, districts (counties) and streets (villages

BOCOG begins search for Olympic sponsors

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-01 13:22:15

Chinanews, Apr. 1 - Yesterday afternoon, more than 100 representatives of
over 50 enterprises from home and abroad gathered at the Asia Hotel to
attend the Promotion Conference on Sponsor Plan of the Beijing 2008
Olympic Games. At the conference the Beijing Organizing Committee for the
Olympic Games (BOCOG) announced that it has officially begun seeking
worldwide sponsors for the games.
How will the Committee judge what enterprises qualify? Yuan Bin, director
of the Market Development Department of the BOCOG, said that, according
to the principle of commercial privacy, she could not reveal the sum
necessary to become a sponsor. But she disclosed that most enterprises
attending yesterday's conference were industry pacesetters and almost all
were famous domestic and international brands.
The sponsor categories released at this time include household
appliances, office equipment, dairy products, logistics, express
delivery, tire production, internet service, communication network
equipment, travel /reception, beer, etc. Yuan disclosed that the
categories would likely increase depending on need, and that the number
of sponsors would basically equal the number of cooperative partners for
the Beijing Olympic Games.

Shanghai Real Estate Expo

The 2005 Shanghai Spring Real Estate Expo raised its curtain yesterday.
The expo, in its seventh year, has become essential to Shanghai's real
estate market. Despite the six year trend of price hikes in Shanghai's
real estate market, demand remains strong. The latest survey of
businessmen indicates that 74% believe the price on real estate will
continue to rise and want to buy a house in 2005. The more than 200
exhibitors included developers and agents of civil-use and commercial
real estate. Their products included houses, villas and commercial
buildings. At least on top grade villa was valued at more than ten
million yuan.

Personal credit info database to be built

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-17 09:14:56

(Source: Xinhuanet)

BEIJING, March 16 - The People's Bank of China (PBOC), China's central
bank, is soliciting public opinions on building a nationwide database for
personal credit information.
A national database is expected to be built at the end of this year. The
database collects personal information including identity, profession and
address, history of financial credit and other relevant data capable of
showing a citizen's credit, according to the PBOC.
The seven-chapter regulation includes items on how banks will report and
search personal credit information, how citizens will apply to the
administration for correcting their information in the database and how
the database will safeguard privacy and security of the information.
The central bank is also trying to set up a blacklist for individuals

Shanghai port may become world's busiest

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-15 15:20:22

Nine years ago, Shanghai was still a small player in the world of large
container ports. But now, it is just a stone's throw away from becoming
world's largest. On March 14th, statistics indicated that the Shanghai
port completed a turnover volume of 3.8 billion tons in 2004, ranking it
as the second largest freight port in the world, and completed a
container turnover volume of 14.55 million standard containers, ranking
it third in the world. In December of last year, the Shanghai port
maintained its rapid growth, with cargo turnover volume reaching 63.66
million tons, an increase of 119% year on year, while container turnover
volume topped 25.37 standard TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), soaring
302% year on year.

Chimney becomes "dragon"

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-14 15:13:02

March 11th is a traditional Chinese festival of the lunar calendar; the
day, which celebrates the coming of spring rains, literally translates as
"the dragon raises its head this day." A beautiful coiled dragon scene
that depicts two dragons playing with a pearl and was constructed out of
a standing scrap chimney, opened to citizens in Jingchanghe Park in
Henan's Baofeng. The 35-meter-high coiled-dragon pole has two dragons of
different vivid colors twisting around it. The work attracted numerous
citizens, becoming a destination for walkers enjoying the first days of
spring.

BEIJING, Mar. 11 - China's first private airline is scheduled to operate
its maiden flight today, a landmark move that will break the government
monopoly in the civil aviation sector.
The first passenger flight of Okay Airways is due to take off at 9:00am
from Binhai International Airport in Tianjin - where it is based - then
fly to Changsha in Central China en route for Kunming in Southwest
China's Yunnan Province.
The aircraft being used is a 189-seat Boeing 737-900 leased from Korea
Airlines.
The new airlines will face challenges from international counterparts as
some foreign low-cost carriers have an eye on China's aviation sector.

China's population is aging faster than expected

www.chinanews.cn 2005-03-02 13:13:03

Chinanews, Ma. 1st - Yesterday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs revealed
that China's population of 60-year-old and above had reached 134 million,
accounting for over 10 percent of the total population. The population of
65-year-old and above was 110 million, accounting for 8.5 percent of the
total. So far, 70 percent of the elderly population in China are
scattered in rural areas. The aging of China's rural population is
particularly striking.
It was revealed that China's population is aging faster than expected,
and this trend would continue. The aging population has created a series
of social problemsCa decrease of society's labor force leading to
heavier social burdens on the diminishing workforce. This issue will
likely become a major factor affecting China's economy.

Stone exhibit highlights brilliance of Han Dynasty

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-25 14:30:00

Han Stone is a type of ornamental stone carved with distinct themes. They
are portrayed in coffin chambers and ancestral halls in the Han Dynasty
(206 BC-220 AD). It tells a lot about the social life in the Han Dynasty,
vividly describing rules and regulations, daily lives and fairy tales of
the Han Dynasty. It reflects the people's attachment to their lives and
pursuit after death at that time. Han Stone is carved by knives instead
of pens. It has two types of carvings, overcast lining and bass-relief.
With a vigorous, simple and succinct style, Han Stone has very high
artistic value. Zaozhuang is one of the Chinese cities where there is a
concentration of Han Stone.

Fujian: 500-year-old sago palm discovered

A rarely seen sago palm was discovered in the courtyard of a house on
Dayuan Avenue, Zhangpu Township, Fujian. The sago palm is 6.2 meters
high, including its 5-meter stem. According to the house owner, the sago
palm has survived for 500 years. Mrs. Huang, the landlady, said that the
sago palm was transplanted from her old house after her new house was
completed in 1976. The sago palm only grew by the height of a circle of
leaves per year. After 28 years, it has only grown by less than 0.3
meter. After it was planted, the ground level of the courtyard was
raised, and there was still a one-meter trunk underground.

Chinese stock market rebounded from its nadir

www.chinanews.cn 2005-02-03 15:15:10

Chinanews, Shanghai, Feb 2 (By Jiang Yu) - After the Shanghai stock
market hit an all-time low of 1188 points yesterday, it finally rebounded
strongly today, closing at 1252 points, representing a huge gain of
5.35%. The Shenzhen composite index also rose 5.05%.
The transaction volume of the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets
abruptly expanded to nearly 13 billion yuan (1.57 billion US dollars),
clearly showing that major institutions had been fully prepared for this
move.
In January this year, the price of A Shares on the Shanghai and Shenzhen
stock markets averaged 5.56 yuan (0.672 US dollars), which was next to
the lowest level since the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges were
established. The lowest average price of A Shares was 5.51 yuan (0.666 US
dollars), which occurred in 1995. By the end of last week, 99 stocks on
the Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges had fallen below their net
asset value.
Securities analysts indicated that notwithstanding the recent spate of
good news from China's stock market, it was still a bear's heaven. One
important reason was that the market was in severe shortage of cash with
foreign funds not daring to buy, resulting in "anemia" for the entire
stock market.
Analysts believed that after the recent slump in the Chinese stock
market, most of the risks of individual shares had largely been
discounted and the downside is quite limited. However, a bull market
would still require new capital to be injected into the market
continually.

Tianchi of Changbai Mountain, or Baitoushan, is located in southeast
Jilin on the border between China and North Korea. The northeast side of
the lake belongs to Jilin. Changbai Mountain is a compound dormant
volcano in the shape of a shield and has erupted three times since the
16th century. After spilling a large quantity of lava, the crater became
basin-shaped and formed the present Tianchi as water accumulated year
after year. Generally oval in shape, the lake has an average depth of 204
meters and a maximum depth of 373 meters, the deepest of China's mountain
lakes. In addition, it has a gross reservoir capacity of about 2 billion
cubic meters.
