Chinese School - Platitude overload depreciates language

Opinion / Raymond Zhou

Platitude overload depreciates language
By Raymond zhou (China Daily)
Updated: 2006-04-01 06:24

Language clarifies, but when used rigidly, it often conceals and
confounds.

A street slogan in a northeastern city has sparked a debate, proving that
public mentality is so entrenched on linguistic matters that even a
little toying is met with a wall of frowns.

The slogan that recently appeared in Shenyang of Liaoning Province is
intended to discourage unlicensed drivers. Under normal circumstances,
one might see a call such as "Severely punish unlicensed driving," or
some variation of it.

The poster in question borrowed a line from the popular movie "A World
Without Thieves" and twisted it into, "I detest unlicensed driving
because it does not have any technical difficulty in it."

Some people just don't have a sense of humour. They have dissected the
"technical difficulty" part without understanding that the catchphrase
has a life of its own ever since the movie premiered more than a year ago.

That's the biggest strength of Feng Xiao-gang's films, which are always
able to create simple but memorable lines that eventually work into
everyday conversations.

But for the most part, we live in a world of clichs.

If you read a Chinese newspaper, there are word combinations that are
more inseparable than conjoined twins. Look no further than "warmly
welcome" or "actively participate."

Is there such a thing as a lukewarm welcome? If there is, it doesn't seem
to exist in China. From what I've experienced, "warmly welcome" usually
refers to a reception that is ceremonious and utterly lacking in
spontaneity or warmth. It would be more accurate to use "routinely
welcome" instead.

"Study hard" is the literal translation of another Chinese banality that
has dogged us for decades. How hard counts as "hard"? Reading 400 pages a
day? In the ancient times, we had expressive descriptions such as the one
for the student who hanged his hair around a girder so he wouldn't doze
off while poring over Confucius. That is how vivacious the Chinese
language used to be.

When words are used indiscriminately or simply overused, they lose their
vitality. I remember in the 1970s every store in China had a maxim of
top-10 things to adhere to and it always included, "Be nice to
customers." But in that age of scarcity, sales people wore a customary
look of disdain on their faces. There was not even a hint of contrast or
black humour. The to-do words on the poster had been sapped of their
dictionary-sanctioned meanings.

Nothing dulls a language faster than an overload of platitudes. There are
many culprits: Bureaucrats who stick to a small set of officialese and
hammer it into public sub-consciousness, business executives who pick up
fancy terms from MBA programmes and couch a plain "You're fired" in
resource management jargon, and scholars who insist on rejecting new
coinages because they were created by teenagers.

The same is true everywhere. I once was enamoured with US presidential
speeches. Penned by writers like Peggy Noonon, they seemed to be fresh
and devoid of triteness.

Then I noticed the words "hero" and "coward." American politicians have a
penchant to call victims "heroes." If you are caught by the enemy and
beaten up, you are hailed as a "hero," and if you blow up a building and
kill yourself and 1,000 innocent people, you are a "coward."

I wonder who first used "coward" in this context. Is it because your
enemy would call him a "hero" so you'd have to use the antonym? A
"suicide killer" might be a "merciless desperado" but he is definitely
not weak or faint-hearted, which are synonymous with cowardly.I believe
the first user of "hero" or "coward" in this sense was a genius. He bent
the dictionary definition and achieved rhetorical effect. Then the US
presidents imitated him, creating a semantic paradox.

The writer of the Shenyang poster instinctively knew that "severely
punish" would be as good as invisible. So, he opted for an "it" phrase.
If anything, he was not innovative enough. He should have invented his
own axiom, and then he'll become a linguistic hero.

Free Chinese Lesson - Getting greener by the numbers

Opinion / You Nuo

Getting greener by the numbers

By You Nuo (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-16 07:01

Why would a figure like 1.33 percent stand out in a country where most
things are measured in terms of sheer mass?

It might not seem like much, but 1.33 percent is potentially enough to
balance out all the big numbers and constant record setting - when it is
about progress in environmental protection.

Last week, officials from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS)
delivered a report on the economy's environmental performance.

They said that last year, the country's energy consumption per unit of
GDP - the amount of energy used to deliver every 10,000 yuan of GDP -
registered its first decline in three years - a negative change of 1.33
percent from 2005.

In other words, in 2006, for every 10,000 yuan of GDP, China used an
amount of energy equivalent to a little less than 1.21 tons of standard
coal. The figure for 2005 was 1.22 tons.

Does that mean the economy of the world's largest developing country is
getting somewhat greener? The NBS did not say. But, as the figures show,
the country is making actual, albeit incremental, progress.

Even though the country missed its target of a 4 percent decline in
energy consumption per unit of GDP - and not by a small margin - nothing
could be more valuable than real progress. The key message is that the
economy can continue to grow, and indeed can even race ahead at an
unprecedented pace, while still saving energy.

For an economy that relies heavily on its manufacturing prowess, at a
time when millions of families are building new houses, buying new home
appliances and using more electricity, any bit of progress, even if it is
just a 0.1 percent decline in energy use, would be a hard-won victory.

It is difficult to adorn statistics with romantic connotations like
"Green GDP", a phrase that environment officials tend to like, but
figures are much more significant than words - regardless of whether they
appear in an official speech or in government plans.

Another important feature of the NBS report is that it could point the
way to what can be done, and in which areas of the economy, to further
reduce energy consumption.

The national champion is Beijing. Its record is 0.76 tons of standard
coal per 10,000 yuan of GDP. Next comes Guangdong Province, which checked
in with 0.77 tons of standard coal. Guangdong is the heart of China's
southern manufacturing belt, which is centered in the Pearl River Delta.

But where are Jiangsu, Shandong, Zhejiang and Fujian - all the coastal
manufacturing centers? They should have made as much progress as
Guangdong, if not as much as the national capital, which has been busy
preparing to host the 2008 Olympics and closing down many inner-city
sources of pollution.

That those places are still lagging behind Guangdong reflects a common
problem with their economies - namely too much labor-intensive
manufacturing and too little spending on technology.

Take Zhejiang for example. The province boasts thousands of small - and
some not so small - export companies. But their spending on research and
development is equivalent to only 0.45 percent of their sales, as figures
reported in the Chinese-language press show.

Their cities, perhaps even including the outskirts of Shanghai, are still
heavy with manufacturing and do not have enough services.

Ask them to save energy? Maybe they are still not ready.

Shanghai, Shenzhen stock markets slumped

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-26 12:44:14

Chinanews, April 25 - The Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets once again
had a "black Monday". The main board fell sharply and the Shanghai index
quickly fell through its previous low of 1162 and made a six-year new low
of 1146 before recovering to close at 1157.9, a daily decline of 11.22
points. Some stocks fell by dizzying and unbelievable magnitudes. The
Shenzhen index closed at 282.36, a drop of 4.82 points. The two markets
combined had a turnover of 12 billion Yuan on the day, much more active
than normal.
Analysts reckoned that the re-opening of the IPO market, after a
nine-month hiatus, undoubtedly struck the market hard. The most heavily
weighted stocks in both markets, China Unicom (600050) and Shenzhen
Development Bank (000001) fell sharply, fanning the momentum of
short-sellers. The list of stocks that were falling into a black hole
kept expanding. The number of stocks reaching daily maximum decline
limits or about to totalled nearly one hundred at one point.
At present, investors are most concerned with the question, "At what
level will the stock indexes bottom after making today's new lows?"
Judging from the number of stocks, at one point as many as eighty, that
fell more than 9% to reach the daily limit, the bottom would be a way
off. The beginning of the restructuring of the stock markets will exert
even more downward pressure on prices. Even though investors may not see
further sharp declines of the overall indexes, but they may step on "land
mines" and sustain sharp losses on individual stocks. In the near term,
most investors would face this possible scenario and therefore would lack
confidence.

TAIYUAN, June 17 - Police has captured a foreman of slave workers and
rescued another 20 slave laborers at brick kilns and other illegal
workplaces in north China's Shanxi province, said a provincial public
security official on Saturday.
Heng Tinghan, accused of employing slave laborers in a brick kiln in
Shanxi since March, was captured by police in Danjiangkou City of Hubei
Province Saturday evening.
Heng, 42, was a native of Henan. One of the slave workers has died and 20
others were injured.
To date 351 people, including 22 under the age of 18, were freed in
Shanxi, bringing the total number of slave workers rescued in China to
568, including 217 freed in the neighboring Henan Province, said a
spokesman with Shanxi Provincial Public Security Bureau in a statement.
The rescue came after Shanxi launched a large-scale crackdown operation
on various brick kilns, coal and iron mines and other illegal workplaces
that involved some 20,000 police officers.
Wang Dongji, Party branch secretary of Caosheng Village, Shanxi, is being
investigated after his son was found to be an owner of the illegal brick
kiln who forced 32 people to work under extremely cruel conditions.
Wang Bingbing, the kiln owner, and four taskmasters have been detained.
Heng was the contractor of Wang's kiln. Police are hunting for two other
suspects.
A few county-level officials involved in the case are also being
investigated.
By Saturday, Shanxi police have detained 25 suspects involved in the case.

1,000 children worked as child labors in coal mines in Shanxi

www.chinanews.cn 2007-06-15 09:10:30

Chinanews, Guangzhou, June 15 C A group of parents went to Shanxi to
search for their children who had been abducted and worked as child
labors in illegal coal pits in Shanxi. In order to get their children
back, parents spent every penny they had. In two months, they saved more
than 40 children and obtained some clues to the abductors. However, when
they reported the information to local governments, local officials
passed the buck to others and did not care about the issue. In the end,
400 desperate fathers wrote a letter on the website seeking the public's
help. The letter evoked a repercussion on the Internet. It is estimated
that at least 1,000 children have been abducted to Shanxi to work as
child labors, the New Express reported.
The fathers tried their best and finally managed to save 40 children from
Henan Province.
We know that there are still many children who come from other
provinces such as Hubei and Sichuan and now work as child labors in
Shanxi Province. Due to our limited efforts, we only saved 40 children
and thats what we could do. However, we still worry about the rest of
the children and we feel sad that we couldnt help these children, the
fathers said.
Since the illegal coal mines are all located in remote mountainous areas
and the news has spread quickly, it has become even more difficult to
rescue the rest of the children.
Right now, local government in Henan shows great concern about the
abduction. Henan police has reported the abduction case to the Ministry
of Public Security, with the hope that the central police will urge local
police department in Shanxi to handle the case and rescue the children.
Fu Zhenzhong, a reporter from Henan TV Station, went to Shanxi three
times to investigate the incident. He witnessed the whole rescuing
process.
I was shocked by what I saw when I once visited the children working in
an illegal coal mine in Wanrong County, Shanxi. Many children working
there are just teenagers. The youngest one is only 8 years old and the
oldest just 13 years old. These children should have been sitting in
classrooms to study. However, they are doing the heavy physical work that
should have been done by adults. Most of the children were abducted to
Shanxi and some chose to work there to earn money. Whether they were
forced to go there or chose to go there, I felt deeply sad because I
could do nothing about it. As far as I know, there are at least 1,000
children who work in Shanxi as child labors, Fu said.

China storm into semis in Sudirman Cup

www.chinanews.cn 2007-06-13 10:35:39

(Source: Xinhua)

Cai Yu of China plays a shot alongside his partner Fu Haifeng during
their doubles match against England's Robert Blair and David Lindley at
the Sudirman Cup World Team Badminton Championships in Glasgow, Scotland,
June 12, 2007.

June 13 - Title holders China became the first team into the semifinals
of the Sudirman Cup world team badminton championships after a second
consecutive 5-0 victory over England on Tuesday.
The five-time winners, who whitewashed Thailand 5-0 in their opening day
fixture, did not surrender even a single set after the first two Division
one Group A ties.
As Malaysia beat Thailand 3-2 in the other Group A match, Malaysia and
England both collected one win out of two while Thailand were left with
two defeats.
Earlier in Group B matches, Asian powerhouse South Korea took a major
stride towards the last four with their 4-1 victory over Chinese Hong
Kong, making it two wins out of two.
"Our shuttlers played better games than the first day. We didn't lose a
singe set but usually you have weaker opponents in group stage," Chinese
team coach Li Yongbo told a press conference after the match.
"The real battle hasn't started yet. We'll wait and see what'll happen in
the semifinals," he added.
Li tried a different lineup from the previous night but the Chinese
seemed just unstoppable on the way to their sixth title.
Mixed doubles Zheng Bo and Gao Ling claimed the opening point 21-14,
21-16 against Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg while Andrew Smith gave
men's singles world number one Lin Dan a fright before going down 21-19,
21-11.
"Smith pressured me much in the first set," Lin said afterwards, "but as
long as I adapted to his game, I took control of the court."
"The first set was quite good. He's always difficult to play against, but
I have played him a couple of times before and taken him to three sets,"
Smith said.
"Lin played very well on game point in the first and the second set was
hard and it just frittered away."
Chinese veteran Zhang Ning replaced Xie Xingfang to play in the women's
singles and she gave no chance to Tracey Hallam before wrapping up the
victory for China with a 21-9, 21-15 comfortable win.
Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng then disposed of Robert Blair and David Lindley
21-14, 21-7 in the men's doubles and the whitewash was capped when Gail
Emms and Donna Kellogg were brushed aside 21-12, 21-13 by Wei Yili and
Zhang Yawen.
South Koreans started strong against Chinese Hong Kong as Han Sang Hoon
and Hwang Yu Mi eased to a 21-10, 21-11 win against Yohan Hadikusumo and
Hoi Wah Chau, and Park Sung Hwan made it 2-0 with a convincing 21-12,
21-13 men's singles victory over Wei Ng.
Pui Yin Yip hit back to win a close women's singles against Jang Soo
Young, but Lee Jae Jin and Hwang Ji Man put the result beyond doubt with
a comfortable 21-16, 21-16 triumph over Albertus Susanto Njoto and
Wiratama.
Indonesia, who fell victim to the Koreans on the opening night,
re-ignited hopes of matching their 1989 success in the tournament with a
narrow 4-1 win over Denmark, with Tine Rasmussen grabbing the Danes' only
rubber in the women's singles.
The opening men's singles proved to be the key as Olympic champion Taufik
Hidayat emerged as the hero with a 21-18, 18-21, 21-13 victory over world
No. 7 Peter Gade.
"In big part of the game I played very good and Taufik also played a good
game today," said Gade.
"I had a good chance winning the first game but Taufik controlled the net
and it's very important unfortunately. The first game very decisive, he
is lucky but also very good."
Denmark will have to face a tough challenge of beating South Koreans on
Wednesday to clinch a semifinal spot.

Great Wall most attractive to overseas tourists

www.chinanews.cn 2007-06-07 15:37:04

Chinanews, Beijing, June 7 - Feng Huiling, vice president of the Renmin
University of China, published the result of her research on the cultural
symbol of China and its relations with the 2008 Olympic Games on June 5,
finding that the Great Wall is the favorite of 80%-plus overseas tourists.
Feng's research covers famous politicians and businesspeople from 50-plus
countries and regions in the world, and some 3,000 articles from media
both at home and abroad. According to her research, 36% of respondents
are interested in Chinese food, and 80.8% of them say that they will
visit the Great Wall first if they have a chance to come to China, with
the Forbidden City, Tian'anmen, Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven next
to it.
About 36% of the respondents are interested in Chinese calligraphy, not
the Beijing Opera, which is quite beyond Feng's expectation.

Yuan hits record high against US dollar

www.chinanews.cn 2007-06-06 14:19:23

(Source: Xinhua)

BEIJING, June 6 - China's currency, the yuan, gained 29 basis points on

time, according to the Chinese Foreign Exchange Trading System.
The central parity rate of the yuan, also known as Renminbi (RMB), stood
at 7.6398 yuan to the U.S. dollar, showing a strong fortifying momentum
on the second day after the yuan's value exceeded 7.65 on Tuesday.
The yuan has climbed 1,689 basis points from 7.8087 yuan to one U.S.
dollar posted on the last trading day of 2006.
The accumulative appreciation since July 21, 2005, when China

it would widen the floating band of yuan against the dollar for daily

The yuan rose against the U.S. dollar by 0.72 percent in May, the record
for a single month since July 2005.
On Wednesday, the yuan lost 72 basis points from the previous trading day
to reach a central parity rate of 10.3237 yuan against the euro. And it
fell 106 basis points to 6.2887 yuan against 100 Japanese yen.
