Model of small satellite, Beijing No.1, used for the Olympic Games
Device that can distinguish human faces
Chinanews, Beijing, May 17 C A batch of high-tech products to be used
for the 2008 Olympic Games were exhibited at the Beijing Technology Week
on May 16, or 450 days before the event takes place.
Products that were shown include a small satellite, electronic monitoring
devices, bricks that divert rain, etc. The products mainly fall into
seven categories: intelligent transportation, clean energy, environmental
protection, Olympic safety, stadium and gym construction, information and
telecommunications, and high-tech sports. All these products are designed
and made by China.
One of the interesting products on display is a small satellite used for
the Olympic Games called Beijing No. 1. Its sensor measures 4 meters and
it is considered as one with the highest resolution among all
transmission type micro satellites made in China. The satellite can send
32-meter-long spectrums and can cover an area of 600 kilometers. It has
the largest width among the same type of satellites produced in the
world. The satellite was launched into space in 2005 and can work in
space for at least 5 years. It will be used to monitor some key areas in
Beijing. It is said that the satellite can pinpoint any place to monitor
whenever it wants. It is also the first small satellite that is made for
the Olympic Games.
Another novelty exhibited is a device that can distinguish human faces.
The inventor of the device, Ma Xin, a Ph.D at the Chinese Academy of
Sciences, said that the new device will make it impossible for criminal
suspects to disguise themselves among the crowd. The new device will be
installed in the Olympic stadiums and gyms, Olympic Village, and athletes
apartments.
