Beijing Olympic construction projects to commence

www.chinanews.cn 2005-01-17 14:04:41

Chinanews, Jan 16th - The construction of 19 Olympic gymnasiums and
affiliated facilities will commence one after another this year. The
infrastructure stresses five key areas on space layout. They are the area
around the Olympic gymnasiums, the integrated urban service districts,
the area surrounding the urban reconstruction districts, the Southern
City area and the suburban satellite cities.
Including the Olympic gymnasiums, there are three difficult problems
during the construction of these key areas. The first problem, voiced
vociferously by citizens, relates to traffic jams, city greening, and
water supply which should be focal points of society. The second flash
point problem of water supply safety and municipal flood prevention and
drainage are strategic issues that affect the ability of the economy to
develop in healthy and secure ways. The final problem relates to the
capacity of the municipal infrastructure to deal with abrupt societal
incidents.
In addition, besides the reconstruction of the existing stadiums in
Beijing, construction of world class exhibition facilities will be the
key project this year.
