Chinese Online Class - Bryant says he apologized to Kupchak

Sports / Basketball

Bryant says he apologized to Kupchak

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-07 00:46

Although he didn't rescind his trade request, Kobe Bryant softened his
stance somewhat Thursday night, saying he had apologized to Los Angeles
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak in person for the way he handled his
upset feelings five weeks ago.

"I just felt like as a man, it was important for me to tell him, `I'm
sorry it came out that way,"' Bryant said at a lightly attended news
conference at Loyola Marymount, where he spoke mainly about his camp for
youngsters at the school this week.

Bryant said that while he could have called Kupchak, it was important he
speak with him face-to-face.

"I was frustrated, I was venting," Bryant said.

When asked whether he still wanted out, Bryant replied: "I haven't
thought about that in a long, long time. I've kind of stepped away from
that. I've concentrated on Team USA. What I say is what I say. We'll just
have to see where it goes."

The U.S. national team begins practice July 20 in Las Vegas.

Bryant, the NBA's leading scorer the past two seasons, complained about a
lack of talent around him at season's end, and said May 30 he wanted to
be traded, adding nothing could change his mind.

Despite that request, the Lakers have made clear that trading Bryant
isn't in their plans. Bryant is owed $88.6 million over the next four
seasons, but could terminate his contract in two years.

The Lakers haven't won a playoff series since reaching the NBA finals in
2004 for the fourth time in five years. With Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal
leading the way, they won three straight championships from 2000-02.

O'Neal was traded to Miami in July 2004, a day before Bryant signed a
seven-year, $136.4 million contract to remain with the Lakers, who
haven't won a playoff series since O'Neal left.

Bryant said he hasn't spoken with Derek Fisher since Monday, when Fisher
was released by the Utah Jazz so he can concentrate on finding the best
care for his 11-month-old daughter, who has cancer in her left eye.

Fisher said he wants to live in one of the six or seven cities being
considered for Tatum's care. Bryant and Fisher were teammates and, from
all indications, good friends while playing with the Lakers from
1996-2004 -- the first eight seasons of their NBA careers.

Kupchak didn't rule out the possibility of a return to the Lakers for
Fisher, who signed with Golden State as a free agent after the 2003-04
season and was later traded to Utah.

Bryant said 450 kids aged 8-to-18 attended his camp.

Bayern coach delighted with Klose debut

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-02 08:49

HONG KONG, July 1 - Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld expects great
things from Miroslav Klose next season after watching the Germany striker
score on his debut.

Klose got the equaliser in Bayern's 2-1 win over Brazilian club Sao Paulo
in a friendly on Sunday before Hamit Altintop, another of Bayern's
signings for the new season, grabbed the winner. Marcel had given Sao
Paulo a first-half lead.

"It's very important for the morale of a new player to deal with the
pressure ... so having a successful debut for Bayern Munich will help him
a lot," Hitzfeld told reporters.

"He has a lot of possibilities, a lot of skills and he's also an integral
part of the German national squad. He's very quick, very mobile, so I
expect a lot from him next season."

The 29-year-old Klose, top scorer at last year's World Cup in Germany,
was signed from Werder Bremen on Tuesday in a deal worth an estimated 10
million euros ($13.45 million).

The Hong Kong "Reunification Cup" match marked the former British
colony's 10th anniversary under Chinese rule on July 1.

Chinese Class - Video game addiction: A new diagnosis?

WORLD / Health

Video game addiction: A new diagnosis?

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-22 13:56

CHICAGO - The telltale signs are ominous: teens holing up in their rooms,
ignoring friends, family, even food and a shower, while grades plummet
and belligerence soars. The culprit isn't alcohol or drugs. It's video
games, which for certain kids can be as powerfully addictive as heroin,
some doctors contend.

Joyce Protopapas, poses at her home in Frisco, Texas, Wednesday, June 20,
2007, by a computer with the web site of the support group On-Line Gamers
Anonymous on the screen. [AP]

A leading council of the nation's largest doctors' group wants to have
this behavior officially classified as a psychiatric disorder, to raise
awareness and enable sufferers to get insurance coverage for treatment.

In a report prepared for the American Medical Association's annual policy
meeting starting Saturday in Chicago, the council asks the group to lobby
for the disorder to be included in a widely used mental illness manual
created and published by the American Psychiatric Association.

AMA delegates could vote on the proposal as early as Monday.

It likely won't happen without heated debate. Video game makers scoff at
the notion that their products can cause a psychiatric disorder. Even
some mental health experts say labeling the habit a formal addiction is
going too far.

Dr. James Scully, the psychiatric association's medical director, said
the group will seriously consider the AMA report in the long process of
revising the diagnostic manual. The current manual was published in 1994;
the next edition is to be completed in 2012.

Up to 90 percent of American youngsters play video games and as many as
15 percent of them more than 5 million kids may be addicted,
according to data cited in the AMA council's report.

Joyce Protopapas of Frisco, Texas, said her 17-year-old son, Michael, was
a video addict. Over nearly two years, video and Internet games
transformed him from an outgoing, academically gifted teen into a
reclusive manipulator who flunked two 10th grade classes and spent
several hours day and night playing a popular online video game called
World of Warcraft.

"My father was an alcoholic ... and I saw exactly the same thing" in
Michael, Protopapas said. "We battled him until October of last year,"
she said. "We went to therapists, we tried taking the game away.

"He would threaten us physically. He would curse and call us every name
imaginable," she said. "It was as if he was possessed."

When she suggested to therapists that Michael had a video game addiction,
"nobody was familiar with it," she said. "They all pooh-poohed it."

Last fall, the family found a therapist who "told us he was addicted,
period." They sent Michael to a therapeutic boarding school, where he has
spent the past six months at a cost of $5,000 monthly that insurance
won't cover, his mother said.

A support group called On-Line Gamers Anonymous has numerous postings on
its Web site from gamers seeking help. Liz Woolley, of Harrisburg, Pa.,
created the site after her 21-year-old son fatally shot himself in 2001
while playing an online game she says destroyed his life.

In a February posting, a 13-year-old identified only as Ian told of
playing video games for nearly 12 hours straight, said he felt suicidal
and wondered if he was addicted.

"I think i need help," the boy said.

Postings also come from adults, mostly men, who say video game addiction
cost them jobs, family lives and self-esteem.

According to the report prepared by the AMA's Council on Science and
Public Health, based on a review of scientific literature,
"dependence-like behaviors are more likely in children who start playing
video games at younger ages."

Overuse most often occurs with online role-playing games involving
multiple players, the report says. Blizzard Entertainment's teen-rated,
monster-killing World of Warcraft is among the most popular. A company
spokesman declined to comment on whether the games can cause addiction.

Dr. Martin Wasserman, a pediatrician who heads the Maryland State Medical
Society, said the AMA proposal will help raise awareness and called it
"the right thing to do."

But Michael Gallagher, president of the Entertainment Software
Association, said the trade group sides with psychiatrists "who agree
that this so-called 'video-game addiction' is not a mental disorder."

"The American Medical Association is making premature conclusions without
the benefit of complete and thorough data," Gallagher said.

Dr. Karen Pierce, a psychiatrist at Chicago's Children's Memorial
Hospital, said she sees at least two children a week who play video games
excessively.

"I saw somebody this week who hasn't been to bed, hasn't showered ...
because of video games," she said. "He is really a mess."

She said she treats it like any addiction and creating a separate
diagnosis is unnecessary.

Dr. Michael Brody, head of a TV and media committee at the American
Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, agreed. He praised the AMA
council for bringing attention to the problem, but said excessive
video-game playing could be a symptom for other things, such as
depression or social anxieties that already have their own diagnoses.

"You could make lots of behavioral things into addictions. Why stop at
video gaming?" Brody asked. Why not Blackberries, cell phones, or other
irritating habits, he said.

Anxiety affects obesity surgery success

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-06-15 15:43

LOS ANGELES - Extremely obese people suffering from depression or anxiety
tend to lose less weight after obesity surgery than mentally healthy
people, researchers reported Thursday in a study that suggests such
patients could benefit from treatment beforehand.

People diagnosed with mood or anxiety disorders on average lost 81 pounds
six months after gastric bypass surgery compared to their counterparts
who shed 86 pounds. Although both groups lost significant weight after
surgery, people without mental health problems did slightly better.

"Patients with a lifetime history of mental health problems might benefit
from closer surveillance," said lead author Melissa Kalarchian of the
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

The federally funded research was presented at a meeting of bariatric
surgeons in San Diego Thursday. Researchers plan to follow patients for
up to two years to determine if there's a weight difference over time.

Many hospitals and insurers require surgery candidates to go through a
psychological evaluation before obesity surgery to make sure they are
mentally fit for the operation and the lifestyle change afterward.
Depressed people aren't automatically disqualified for surgery, but those
who are suicidal or abusing drugs and alcohol are usually ruled out.

How depression and other mental health disorders are handled before
obesity surgery vary widely by medical center.

For example, surgery candidates at the University of California, San
Diego, go through a rigorous mental health evaluation first.

Those with serious problems are usually treated before surgery. That
could include antidepressants, psychotherapy or more family involvement,
said the center's director William Perry.

"The success of surgery is only as good as the willingness of a patient
to make a life change," Perry said.

In the new study, Pittsburgh researchers interviewed 207 surgery
candidates and found two-thirds had a history of depression, bipolar
disorder, post-traumatic stress syndrome or panic attacks. The vast
majority were women with an average body-mass index of 51. A person with
a BMI of over 40 is considered morbidly obese.

After adjusting for age, gender and race, researchers compared weight
loss six months after surgery. Patients with a history of depression on
average weighed 322 pounds before surgery and 241 afterward. Those with
no mental health problems weighed 303 pounds before the operation and 217
pounds afterward.

Having a history of mental health problems should not prevent people from
getting obesity surgery, even though they may not lose quite as much
weight as mentally healthy people, said Dr. Philip Schauer, president of
the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

Gastric bypass, or stomach-stapling surgery, is the most common obesity
operation performed in the United States with about 177,600 people
undergoing the procedure last year. Federal guidelines say a person
should be at least 100 pounds overweight and should have tried
traditional weight-loss means before choosing surgery.

Gastric bypass involves reducing the size of the stomach and bypassing
part of the small intestine, where digestion occurs. People eat less and
absorb fewer calories as a result.

Meg Phelps, a 48-year-old social worker from Pennsylvania, struggled with
major depression and low self-esteem for a decade. Often, she wouldn't go
out or even make eye contact with people.

Four years ago, Phelps had obesity surgery at the Geisinger Medical
Center in Danville, Pa. Beforehand, she had a medical evaluation and
attended several months of counseling for depression.

Phelps, who weighed 335 pounds, shed 120 pounds after the surgery and no
longer has to see a therapist. She even went back to college and got a
degree in social work last year.

"It helped me to take charge of my life," Phelps said of the operation.

absorb fewer calories as a result.

Chinese language - Study: Vitamin D reduces cancer risk

WORLD / Health

Study: Vitamin D reduces cancer risk

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-08 13:15

OMAHA, Neb. - Building hope for one pill to prevent many cancers, vitamin
D cut the risk of several types of cancer by 60 percent overall for older
women in the most rigorous study yet.

The new research strengthens the case made by some specialists that
vitamin D may be a powerful cancer preventive and most people should get
more of it. Experts remain split, though, on how much to take.

"The findings ... are a breakthrough of great medical and public health
importance," declared Cedric Garland, a prominent vitamin D researcher at
the University of California-San Diego. "No other method to prevent
cancer has been identified that has such a powerful impact."

While the most reliable yet, the study does have drawbacks. It was
designed mainly to monitor how calcium and vitamin D improve bone health,
and the number of cancer cases overall was small, showing up in just 50
patients.

"It's a very small study," said Dr. Edward Giovannucci, who researches
nutrition and cancer at the Harvard School of Public Health. "I don't
think it's the last word."

In either case, the study takes an important step in extending several
decades of research that began with observations that cancer rates among
similar groups of people were lower in southern latitudes than in
northern ones. Scientists reasoned that had to do with more direct
sunlight in southern regions.

The skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight's ultraviolet rays.
This study used that same form of the vitamin, known as D3 or
cholecalciferol. Multivitamins usually carry a much weaker variant known
as D2, but D3 is available in stand-alone dietary supplements.

Earlier research has shown that vitamin D helps regulate cell growth, a
fundamental biological process that goes haywire in cancer. Most other
supplements have tended to target specific types of disease in early
testing, like selenium or vitamin E for prostate cancer.

This study, published Friday in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition, is the first time that researchers significantly boosted --
and measured -- blood levels of vitamin D and then followed identical
groups of patients from start to finish.

That's why, despite its modest size, the research was generating
excitement. Nearly all other work has compared disparate groups of
patients.

The researchers at Creighton University in Omaha focused on 1,179
seemingly healthy women with an average age of 67. The women were divided
into three groups: 446 got calcium and vitamin D3 supplements, a similar
number got calcium alone, and 288 took dummy pills.

The research team gave 1,000 daily international units of vitamin D, more
than current guidelines calling for 200 to 600 units depending on a
person's age.

The researchers intended to check mainly for the effects of calcium on
bone health. Their interest in cancer risk was secondary.

But the lower cancer risk stood out. Only 13 women, or 3 percent,
developed cancer over four years of calcium and vitamin D supplements.
With calcium alone, 17 women, or 4 percent, got cancer. With dummy pills,
cancer appeared in 20 women, or 7 percent.

That shows a 60 percent lower cancer risk over four years in the group
taking both supplements, compared to patients taking placebos. And when
the first-year cancers were excluded -- the ones mostly likely present
before the study began -- the findings were stronger still: a 77 percent
lower risk for the combo group.

While the calcium-only group lowered its four-year cancer risk by 47
percent compared to the untreated group, it did no better when early
cancers were excluded. That suggests calcium alone may have done little
in this experiment, the researchers said.

Experts reviewing the study focused on vitamin D as the powerful agent in
the combo group, but it can't be ruled out that calcium might somehow
amplify the effect of vitamin D.

While numbers were limited, these women developed a broad range of
cancers, including disease of the breast, colon, lungs and blood. Dr.
Michael Holick, of Boston University Medical Center, who sat on the
professional panel that issued the 1997 guidelines for vitamin D, said
this study shows that enough vitamin D "markedly reduces the risk of
developing the most serious deadly cancers."

He supports raising the recommended amount of the vitamin and said 1,000
daily units of vitamin D3 would now be reasonable for most people.

On the other hand, Dr. Michael Thun of the American Cancer Society favors
keeping the current recommendation of 200 to 600 IUs for now. And he
cautioned that more than 2,000 units is viewed in the guidelines as
potentially dangerous.

Joan Lappe, the study's lead researcher, said it "just adds to the great
bunch of evidence that we need to have better vitamin D nutrition." Some
foods carry the vitamin, like salmon, tuna and fortified milk, but diet
accounts for little of the vitamin circulating in the body. Overexposure
to the sun can cause skin cancer.

Still, people should consult their doctors before boosting their vitamin
dosage, several experts also warned.

More study is needed to determine if the effects in this study hold true
for large groups of people and men as well as women.

Chinese Mandarin - Chemo and surgery may help colon cancer

WORLD / Health

Chemo and surgery may help colon cancer

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-05 10:33

CHICAGO - Scientists reported promising gains Monday for treating
colorectal cancer that has spread to the liver, showing that chemotherapy
before and after surgery to remove liver tumors can help keep the disease
in check.

The study is the first to scientifically test an approach that many
doctors have tried for patients with advanced colon and rectal cancers.

"It justifies what some of us have already been doing" and shows that
aggressively treating patients with limited spread of colorectal cancer
is reasonable, said Dr. Jeffrey Meyerhardt, a cancer specialist at Dana
Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

About 1 million people worldwide develop colorectal cancer each year,
including more than 150,000 in the United States, where it is the third
most common major cancer. In up to half of all patients, the disease
spreads after initial treatment to the liver. For many cancers, spread to
the liver means the disease has also spread elsewhere, is incurable and
surgery isn't an option.

But with colorectal cancer, sometimes the disease spreads only to the
liver, and surgery to remove these growths increasingly is being
attempted, said Dr. Neal Meropol, director of the gastrointestinal cancer
program at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Even so, recurrence
is common, and only about 30 percent of patients who have this surgery
survive five years.

In the new study, 42 percent of patients who got chemotherapy before and
after the liver surgery had no recurrence after an average of three
years, versus 33 percent of patients who had surgery alone.

The good results mean the approach could become standard treatment for
these patients, said Dr. Bernard Nordlinger, the lead author and a cancer
specialist at Ambroise Pare Hospital in Paris.

Nordlinger presented the results in Chicago at the American Society of
Clinical Oncology's annual meeting.

A separate colorectal cancer study presented Monday showed the targeted
cancer drug Erbitux can modestly improve survival when added to standard
chemotherapy in patients whose disease has spread. Patients who got
Imclone Systems Inc.'s drug survived an average of 8.9 months without
disease progression versus eight months for those who got chemotherapy
alone.

"Although we would all love to have huge breakthroughs that would
revolutionize cancer treatment, those are few and far between," said
Northwestern University's Dr. Al Benson III. Instead, cancer treatment
advances typically come in smaller but important steps like the
colorectal cancer studies presented Monday, which over time lead to real
progress, Benson said.

The chemotherapy-plus-surgery study involved 151 patients who had both
treatments and 152 who had surgery alone. The chemotherapy used was a
commonly used combination of drugs called oxaliplatin leucovorin
fluorouracil.

Complications, including diarrhea and reduced amounts of disease-fighting
white blood cells, were more common in chemotherapy patients but were
still within an acceptable range, Nordlinger said.

A separate study presented Monday involved primary liver cancer - disease
that originates in the liver rather than spreads there. Researchers said
they have found the first drug that improves survival for liver cancer
patients - a breakthrough that likely will become standard treatment.

Those results occurred in patients with advanced liver cancer treated
with the drug sorafenib, or Nexavar, which is marketed by Bayer
Pharmaceuticals Corp. and Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. to treat advanced
kidney cancer.

The companies are expected to seek U.S. approval this summer for treating
liver cancer with the drug.

Chinese School - Bush to name Zoellick to lead World Bank

WORLD / America

Bush to name Zoellick to lead World Bank

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-30 08:25

WASHINGTON - Robert Zoellick, a nimble negotiator who has crisscrossed
the globe as President Bush's trade chief and as the country's No. 2
diplomat, is the White House's choice to be the next World Bank president.

Then-Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick announces his resignation
at the State Department in Washington, in this June 19, 2006 file photo.
[AP]

Bush will announce the decision on Wednesday, according to a senior
administration official.

He would succeed Paul Wolfowitz, who is stepping down June 30 after
findings by a special bank panel that he broke bank rules when he
arranged a hefty compensation package in 2005 for his girlfriend, Shaha
Riza, a bank employee.

The controversy led to calls from Europeans, the bank's staff, aid
groups, Democratic politicians and others for Wolfowitz to resign from
the poverty-fighting institution.

A seasoned veteran of politics both inside the Beltway and on the
international stage, Zoellick, 53, has a knack for mastering intricate
subject matter and translating it into policies. He is known for pulling
facts and figures off the top of his head. He also has a reputation for
being a demanding boss.

Bush's selection of Zoellick must be approved by the World Bank's
24-member board.

The White House expects Zoellick to gain the board's acceptance. The
senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in advance of Bush's
announcement, said so far other nations have had a positive reaction.

Zoellick announced last June that he was leaving his post as deputy
secretary of state to join a Wall Street firm and work to develop
investment markets around the world.

At the time, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Zoellick had served
as her "alter ego" in the department. He was widely believed to be have
been interested in getting a promotion and becoming Treasury Secretary.
But that job went to Goldman Sachs chief Henry Paulson.

If ultimately approved as World Bank chief, Zoellick will need to regain
trust, rebuild credibility and mend frayed relations inside the
institution as well as with its member countries around the world.

All of those things are critical for the bank's new leader, who will have
to persuade countries to contribute close to $30 billion over the next
few years to fund a centerpiece bank program that provides interest-free
loans to the poorest countries.

"The test of Zoellick is whether he manages to turn around the bank,
which has been in huge disarray," said Elizabeth Stuart, senior policy
adviser for Oxfam International, a group involve in helping the world's
poor.

Zoellick has built strong contacts around the globe over the years.

He is now an executive at Wall Street giant Goldman Sachs. As Bush's
deputy secretary of state he focused on a range of diplomatic duties from
the Sudan peace talks to strategic discussions with China.

Before that, as US Trade Representative, Zoellick played a key role in
negotiations to bring China into the World Trade Organization. He forged
free trade deals between the United States and other countries, including
Singapore, Chile, Australia and Morocco. And, he had helped to launch
global trade talks in Doha, Qatar.

Some groups involved in promoting global health worry about Zoellick's
free-market bent and his past support for trade agreements that critics
viewed as favoring large pharmaceutical companies.

"It's impossible to imagine the same Zoellick who carried water" for the
large pharmaceutical companies "being the kind of advocate African
ministers of health need in order to expand their investments in salaries
for doctors and nurses," said Asia Russell, director of international
policy for Health GAP, which stands for (Global Access Project) .

Peru, however, welcomed the selection.

"My impression is that it's a good choice President Bush is making,"
Peru's Foreign Trade Minister Mercedes Araoz told The Associated Press.
"He was a driving force of the US trade agenda in seeking association
with developing countries, among them, Peru."

Under Bush's father's administration, Zoellick worked closely with
then-Secretary of State James Baker on policies pertaining to the end of
the Cold War. He also had worked on negotiations on German unification.

Chinese Online Class - Study: Pill raises risk of heart attacks

WORLD / Health

Study: Pill raises risk of heart attacks

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-22 09:34

A widely used diabetes pill raises the risk of heart attacks and possibly
death, according to a scientific analysis that reveals what some experts
are calling another Vioxx-like example of the government failing to
protect the public from an unsafe drug.

A scientist works in GlaxoSmithKline's plant in Singapore, December 16,
2005. [Reuters]

More than 6 million people worldwide have taken the drug, sold as Avandia
and Avandamet, since it came on the market eight years ago to help
control blood sugar in people with the most common form of diabetes.
About 1 million Americans use it now.

Pooled results of dozens of studies on nearly 28,000 people revealed a 43
percent higher risk of heart attack for those taking Avandia compared to
people taking other diabetes drugs or no diabetes medication, according
to the analysis published online Monday. The study, published by the New
England Journal of Medicine, also found a trend toward more heart-related
deaths.

The findings are frightening because two-thirds of diabetics die of heart
problems, so a drug that boosts this possibility is especially hazardous
for them.

Still, the actual risks to any single patient appear small. Diabetics
should talk to their doctors before stopping any medication, said a
statement issued by the American Diabetes Association and two groups of
heart doctors.

Avandia's maker, British-based GlaxoSmithKline PLC, disputed the results
of the analysis but acknowledged that its own similar review found a 30
percent increased risk - information it gave last August and possibly
even earlier to the US Food and Drug Administration. But the company said
that more rigorous studies did not confirm excess risk.

FDA officials issued a safety alert on Monday and said they likely would
convene an advisory panel, but planned no immediate changes to the
current side effect warnings on the drug's packaging.

Several members of Congress expressed alarm. Rep. Henry Waxman ,
D-Calif., chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government
Reform, announced a hearing for June 6 on FDA's role. On the Senate
floor, Charles Grassley , R-Iowa, criticized the agency for not acting
more swiftly.

"Do we have another Vioxx on our hands with Avandia? I am not sure, but I
intend to find out," he said, referring to the blockbuster arthritis drug
withdrawn in 2004 because of safety problems. "Tens of millions of
prescriptions have been written for Avandia, and Medicare and Medicaid
have paid hundreds of millions of dollars for this drug."

Avandia is used to treat Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the
disease, which is linked to obesity and afflicts 18 million Americans and
200 million people worldwide. This form of diabetes occurs when the body
does not make enough insulin or cannot effectively use what it manages to
produce.

Avandia, or rosiglitazone, helps sensitize the body to insulin and was
considered a breakthrough medication for blood-sugar control. It also is
combined with metformin and sold as Avandamet. Only one other drug like
it - pioglitazone, sold as Actos and Actoplus Met by Takeda
Pharmaceuticals - is sold in the United States.

Avandia had total US sales of $2.2 billion in 2006, slightly trailing
$2.6 billion for Actos, according to IMS Health, a healthcare information
company. About 13 million Avandia prescriptions were filled in the US
last year. A one-month supply of Avandia sells for between $90 and $170.

GlaxoSmithKline also has been testing Avandia to try to prevent diabetes
in those at high risk of it, and, in separate studies, to prevent
Alzheimer's disease.

However, the new analysis casts a pall on its prospects for prevention as
well as treatment, many specialists said. The study was led by Dr. Steven
Nissen and statistician Kathy Wolski at the Cleveland Clinic. Nissen
accepts no personal fees for consulting for any drug makers.

While the analysis doesn't spell out the actual the rate of heart attacks
among Avandia users, the 43 percent excess risk is in line with what a
similar analysis found for lower doses of Vioxx use, Nissen said. Another
context for that number: Heart attack risks are lowered about 25 percent
by cholesterol-reducing statin drugs - ample reason to prescribe them.

The Avandia studies Nissen analyzed were not designed to look for heart
risks and many of them were so short - some only 24 weeks - that risks
may only appear over the longer term, he said.

Chinese Online Class - Some profit off Va. Tech domain names

WORLD / America

Some profit off Va. Tech domain names

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-10 09:08

BLACKSBURG, Va. - When Fred McChesney heard about the Virginia Tech
shooting spree on April 16, he was appalled. But what he did next has
appalled many others. Within hours of the rampage, the Phoenix man began
buying dozens of domain names - CampusKillings.com,
VirginiaTechMurders.com, SlaughterInVirginia.com - in the hopes of
selling them later to the highest bidder.

A Lunch Box key ring adorns an American flag at the memorial for the
slain students in front of Burruss Hall on the Virginia Tech Drillfield
in Blacksburg, Va., Wednesday, May 9, 2007. [AP]

McChesney, 48, said he saw it as an opportunity to show his contempt for
firearms by featuring anti-gun content on the domains he is selling.

He also saw it as an opportunity to cash in.

"Everyone is profiting off of this," McChesney said. "I'm not hurting
anyone."

Domain names related to the tragedy were snapped up almost immediately by
people hoping to sell them off for a profit or use them to link to
advertisers. The cost of registering such domains is generally less than
$10 - but some are now being auctioned off for thousands.

While many consider the practice repellant, experts say it has become
commonplace.

"Any time there's a big news event, people go register the domain names,"
said Christine Jones, general counsel for GoDaddy.com, the world's
largest domain registration service. "Nine-eleven they did it, Katrina
they did it, the tsunami in southeast Asia they did it."

Especially troubling to some is the registration of domain names related
to those killed in the tragedy. On the same day the victims' names were
released, people began registering domains named after the dead, such as
JarrettLane.com. Victims' friends and family members seeking to create a
memorial site under the same Internet address would then have to purchase
it from the domain name owner - for whatever price the owner wants.

"If anybody is working to make a profit off of this tragedy by selling
these kinds of things, it's just a crying shame," university spokesman
Mark Owczarski said. "Obviously, you wouldn't want anybody to make a
profit off something as horrendous as this."

Jeremiah Johnston, chief operating officer for domain name broker
Sedo.com, said his company has shut down domains named after the victims
as well as dozens of others related to the tragedy, including
BlacksburgBloodbath.com and SchoolSlaughter.com.

"We do feel that they fly in the face of our offensive domain policy,"
Johnston said. "It is quite tasteless."

GoDaddy.com shut down one site purporting to raise money for the victims'
families after university officials said they weren't aware of any such
charity, Jones said.

But in general, there are few restrictions on what people can register.
The Internet's key oversight agency, the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers, has arbitration procedures for resolving
disputes, but they cover only trademarks and service marks, which can
include names of celebrities. Federal laws also focus on trademark
owners, not the names of non-famous individuals such as the victims.

"It's kind of exploitative, but it's not really cybersquatting,"
University of South Carolina cyberspace law professor Ann Bartow said.
"It's socially, normatively disgusting, but it's not trademark bad faith."

McChesney, who has been "hugely anti-gun" since his brother shot him in
the face with a BB gun when he was a child, said he hopes to use some of
his domains to draw attention to what he calls an epidemic of gun
violence in America.

He also plans to give away his memorial domain names to Virginia Tech
students, and has donated one so far. He hopes to sell others, such as
VaTechTheMovie.com, to companies. So far, he hasn't sold any.

He understands that many will vilify him. But he doesn't think he's doing
anything wrong.

"What I'm doing is the equivalent of rearranging deck chairs on the
Titanic," he said. "Period."
